3D Virtual worlds hold potential for use as assessment media. Immersive digital environments can be both used as container or showcase of assessments over time (i.e. eportfolio) or used to model and assess particular learning outcomes, themselves.
3D Virtual worlds hold potential for use as authentic assessment media - a dialogic space useful for students in myriad ways. In this article, the use of immersive digital environments will be examined as both showcase of assessments over time (i.e. eportfolio) and for use to model and assess particular learning outcomes and particular situations or skills. Drawing from a number of examples from virtual environments such as Second Life, Project Wonderland, and others, this article will offer a pattern potentially useful to teachers for developing authentic assessments from different disciplines of stuents engaging in 3D environments.
